About
I'm Matthew, a woodturner based in Pittsburgh. I started turning in college, in a basement shop with a beat-up lathe and a beginner's enthusiasm for sharp tools. Twelve years and several hundred bowls later, I still spend most weekends covered in shavings.
My work is mostly functional — bowls, vessels, mills, the occasional platter — turned from locally sourced and reclaimed hardwoods. Spalted maple, cherry, walnut, white oak. I'm drawn to wood that has a history: windfall trees, slabs from arborists, burls from neighbors who heard I'd take them off their hands.
I also teach. There's a particular pleasure in handing the tool to someone for the first time, watching them feel a clean cut land, and knowing they'll never forget what that felt like. If you're curious, come take a class — no experience required.
